Names are Becoming More Diverse

Boys with a Top 100 Name

As you can see from the charts, Americans are picking more and more unique names in recent years. For example, in 1940, the top 100 boy names were used to name 74% of all baby boys born while the top 100 names of 2016 were only used for 40%. In fact, just 250 boy names were used to name 86% of all babies boys born in 1940. Today, the top 250 boy names, only account for 58%. So, while the most popular names are still used for the majority of babies born today, that trend is changing.

The trend is especially dramatic during the 90s. During this decade and after, modern names were invented, some vintage names gained popularity for a second time, and gender-neutral names became more popular.

Interestingly, parents are choosing more unique names for their girls than boys. Note that the top 250 boy names account for 58% of boys in 2016, but the top 250 girl names only account for 46% of girls.

Americans Use More Names than Ever

It isn't just a shift to less popular names. There are an entirely new generation of modern names. Some have rocketed to popularity in recent years while others have yet to gain any type of widespread usage. Also, even though many of the fastest rising names have an equally fast decline in popularity, they rarely stop being used completely.

So, what are some of the truly unique names Americans have come up with? Examples include Mendeecees, Loveth, Naruto, Aelin, Marinette, Nivetha, Hadiza, Lordina, Renzel, and Seanix

Unique Names by Year

To protect privacy, names given to less than 5 babies within a year are not included in the data provided by the Social Security Administration and so are not counted as unique names in the graph above.

Unique but Recognizable Names of 2016

Check out the most popular names that didn't make it into the top 250 and can still be considered unique. While some of the names trending now may not be very common throughout history, if given to a baby now, they aren't likely have a unique name among their peer group.

As mentioned above, girl names are even more diverse than the names for boys. For boy names, people have started to look for names outside of the top 250. However, for girls, people have started to look for names outside of the top 500. We've listed all names outside the top 250 for both genders to make sure the names are at still recognizable and are less likely to be mistaken for other names, misspelled, mispronounced, etc.
