User Submitted Meanings

  • A user from United Kingdom says the name Elima is of Unknown origin and means "Elima is the Swedish language version for the county of Elimaki in South Eastern Finland. The county and large amounts of other lands were gifted to Knight Henrik Wrede's widow, Gertrud von Ungern, a Latvian nobelwoman in her own right (she is buried under the altar of the church of Porvoo, in Finland), in around 1605 by the Swedish king Johan IX. She was the vidow of Knight Henrik Wrede, who was poshumously given the title of Baron for life and for all he's descendants (including 2 young living sons Carl-Henrik and Casper) by the King, for saving the kings life at battle of Livland in 1064. Knight Wrede saw the kings horse being killed in the battle, jumped of he's own horse and gave it to the king, it saved the kings life but got Wrede killed. In a battle in those times it amounted to suicide, as you could not have survived a battle like that on foot in your armour. Threrefore Knight Wrede's sons and their descendants are now Barons of Wrede af Elima - meaning "the Wrede family from Elima". Important to notice is that as opposed to most European nobility, the daughters of a Baron inherited the title of Baroness, altough they could not pass it on to their children if they married a man from outside the nobility. But they could use it in their own right.".
