User Submitted Meanings

  • According to a user from Florida, United States, the name Ezrael is of Hebrew origin and means "Ezrael appears to be a combination of two Hebrew words--"Ezra" (meaning "help") and El (meaning "God"). In Hebrew, the name Ezra is spelled ???? and is diverged from the root ??? which means to "help". The word El, which means God (or god) is spelled ?? in Hebrew. Hence, this name appears to be a combination of these two names. Since ??? is a prefect tense (in English, this is past tense) it is most literally translated as "he has helped". Moreover, since the subject of a verb in Hebrew most often follows the verb, ????? (Ezrael) would then literally mean "God has helped". It should be noted that the name, Ezrael, appears to be an improper construction in Hebrew. Combining the verb ??? with the subject ?? in a single word in Hebrew would result a change in vocalization of the word. (The vowels would change.) In Hebrew, ????? would be transliterated (and pronounced) as "Azarel", not as "Ezrael". (There are actually a few biblical example of this construction used as a name. One can be found in Ezra 10:41. You will see in your English Bible that it is spelled Azarel and in a Hebrew Bible it is spelled ?????.) Most likely, this name originated from an English-speaking source who was unaware of how these two words would combine in their original Hebrew languages.".
