A borrowing from Lithuanian karãlius, itself a borrowing from Belarusian кароль (karól’), ultimately from the name of Charlemagne (cf. Latin Carolus, German Karl, Karol). It was coined by A. Kronvalds in 1870. It soon became popular, possibly because of its similarity with Russian король (korolʹ, “king”) and its apparent connection to karš (“war”), and mostly replaced the earlier Germanism ķēniņš.
