  • According to a user from United Kingdom, the name Lavin is of Unknown origin and means "Back in the early early Days in Ireland, There were traditional Irish names like O'Connor, O'Reilly, Murphy, O'Donnell, etc etc. When the British took control, they didn't like the fact that in one Parish there could be several Paddy Murphy's etc etc. So they, the British Rulers, broke it down a bit. For example, the O'Donnell's in Ulster, some were called the Red Hand O'Donnell's etc, etc. Then that broke down, and some Red Hand O'Donnell's called themselves Hand, which is still prevalent in Ulster, then some time later, some family's translated Hand to the Gaelic meaning of Hand to Laimh or 'Laimhin'. The establishment then wanted an English version of Laimhin and moved it onto Lavin. And as they say the rest is History.".
