User Submitted Meanings

  • A user from Illinois, United States says the name Matovu is of African origin and means ""Carnivorous plant" in the Luganda language. Also "Ma Tovu" in Hebrew means "How Beautiful" or "O How Good" or "How Goodly" or "How Great". It is a famous phrase in Balaam's blessing in Numbers 24:5 uttered on the Israelites. He was sent to curse them but instead decided to bless them after realizing the awesomeness of God and that it indeed pleased Him to bless the Israelites. The Hebrew phrase "Ma Tovu" is sometimes spelled "MaTovu". It is pronounced exactly the same way as the Ugandan name "Matovu". "How beautiful [Ma Tovu] are thy tabernacles, O Jacob, and thy tents, O Israel!" (Book of Numbers 24:5) 'Matovu' is pronounced 'Mah - toh - voo'. The 'to' (i.e. 'toh' sound) is not pronounced as "toe" because the 'o' is soft. This is relevant for American English speakers or users of the American English dialect. For example in the word 'confidence' the pronunciation of 'o' is soft.".
