Origin and Meaning of Strydom

User Submitted Meanings

  • According to a user from South Africa, the name Strydom is of Dutch origin and means "Strydom has nothing to do with handsome/business judgment/complexion, absolutely nothing. The translation from the user from Utah is also not entirely correct. Strydom comes from the Dutch Strijdom and is pronounced in 2 syllables, "stry" and "dom", "s", like in snake, "t" like in cat, "d" like in donkey, "m" like in mommy. The "o" and the "r" is not easy to pronounce for foreigners. The "o" sounds like the "o" in octopus, while the "r" is a sound most Afrikaans children only learn to say by the age of 6-7, before which they typically say "l" as in love, while when you never learned to pronounce it it's called Brei (verb), which is a speech deficit similar to lisping. To make the sound you have to put your tongue where you would if you wanted to say "l" and then roll your tongue so that is sounds almost like the French "r", except it's further out in your mouth, not in the back. Strydom can be interpreted to have 2 meanings. Broken up "stry" means "argue" and "dom" means "stupid", directly translated to "arguestupid". Alternatively it can also be broken up into "stryd" meaning battle or football "game", while "om" means over or done. There is not enough information available anywhere today to know for sure what the original meaning was, however considering that they were Dutch colonialists always caught in some or other war, chances are it meant the war is over.".
